Golden State Warriors Trade Possibilities

Monta Ellis

Andris Biedrins

David Lee

Dorrel Wright

Steph Curry

Wait… why did I just cut and paste the Warriors 2010 opening day starting five?  Ummm cause they are the biggest most likely trade pieces the Warriors have available.  How are they going to get leverage?  By giving up their best pieces.

Monta Ellis has been considered the Warriors best player for years.  However, Ellis has a unique ability to allow the opposing guard to outplay him too many times as evidenced by his +/- as John Hollinger of ESPN says “Golden State outscored its opponents quite comfortably as long as Ellis wasn’t around, and finished a whopping 11.4 points per 100 possessions better without Ellis.”  Strong words.  Ellis in the line up  for Golden State was one of the worst productive lineups all year long… Remember the great comebacks AC Law and Jeremy Lin starred in against the Jazz, Bulls and Hornets late last season?

Monta Ellis has been linked in many trade scenarios.  Even though Monta has not made an all star team, he is the Warriors largest trade chip.  So what can we get for him?

If you are like me, you have seen Monta Ellis for Rudy Gay or Andre Igoudala repeatedly.  What I want to see is Monta Ellis for Pau Gasol or Lamar Odom rumors.  How about Monta Ellis for Andrew Bogut rumors?  The Warriors greatest strength is the 2 guard… Monta.  The Warriors greatest weakness is the 5, center.  Jeremy Tyler is not even a true center as he is 6-10, not quite 6-11.  Don’t forget that.

Realistically, the Los Angeles Lakers have BIG problems.  Remember I very much like the idea of Monta Ellis leaving for the Lakers… Especially if we get one of their three big men in return… remember how Andrew Bynum left the floor after loosing his shirt to little JJ Barea!  Pau was known as Pau Ga Soft after his break up with his lady that was fueled by Kobe and Vanessa Bryant talking smack about Pau Gasol’s relations in other cities!  Whether it is Bynum, Gasol or even Lamar Odom, there is a big man to be had in a trade.

Andrew Bynum is a player who some say is the second best center in the NBA to Dwight Howard.  I remember Bynum as the player who the Lakers have consistently had to play without in key situations, and Bynum was largely ineffective against the Celtics in the 2010 NBA Finals.  Bynum’s knees make me wonder if he is closer to Yao Ming (recently retired due to injuries) and Greg Oden (soon to retire due to injuries)  than Howard.

Pau Gasol is a stud…  I don’t care what happened in the 2011 playoffs.  Pau is one of the most versatile big men in the game.  He is a real 7 footer and at 250 lbs, he can defend the post as well as fill up the stat sheet.  Pau could be on the way out in LA due to his recent reputation as soft in the playoffs.  Remember how he played against Kevin Garnett the year before in the finals.  18.6 ppg, 11.6 rpg, 2.6 blocks, 6.3 made FT per game, just dominant.  I don’t remember that Bynum did anything in that series at all.

Pau and Lamar Odom are both over 30.  They have also been part of a winning tradition for years.  Odom is more of a role player, but when it comes to versatility, the 6’10” 230 lbs Odom is the guy.  Realistically he can guard the 3, 4, or 5 at any time.  Offensively, his game is inside out.  He can play the pick and roll, he can even shoot the three where he was above 38% last year, a career high.  There is a knock on Odom that he doesn’t get to the foul line enough and his penchant for 3 pointers could have an affect on his lack of ‘and 1’s’. Realistically, he fits the Warriors game better than Gasol or Bynum.

Give me Lee and Odom starting at the PF and C spots and I will give you a Warriors team that makes the playoffs.  Odom although only 6’10” has proven he can play the center position in a pinch or any other front-court position.

here is the link to another great bleacherreport.com article that helps to make my case… http://bleacherreport.com/articles/853172-nba-trade-rumors-monta-ellis-better-than-dwight-howard-for-kobe-and-la-lakers?fb_ref=article_bottom&fb_source=profile_oneline

Lets think about Monta Ellis with the Lakers and Kobe Bryant… Kobe is on record saying he loves Ellis’ game…  http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/2011/2/19/2002792/l-a-loves-monta-first-it-was-kobe-bryant-and-now-its-griffin-in-a-los

With Kobe, this is not a new thing.  Also consider Ellis’ point guard ability and the ability and willingness to defer to a leader ala Baron Davis and Stephen Jackson.  I think Monta Ellis wants to win and he will do whatever it takes if he is paired with Kobe Bryant.

The more telling point for the Lakers is… they need a replacement for Kobe Bryant.  Kobe has a ton of wear on his body and it is starting to show.  It has been reported that Kobe’s knees are both bone-on-bone.  How much longer can Kobe play?  It is likely the Lakers are looking for the next Kobe… back when Jerry West was the Lakers GM, he said Ellis is going to be a great NBA player.  Where are we now?  West is with the Warriors and is on record saying that Ellis could be traded.

Following is just another great article that supports my Ellis for Odom rant…

There are so many other trade scenarios, including dumping Biedrins contract for stiffs.  I would even consider Steph Curry for the right player.(Curry, Lee and Wright for Chris Paul and others is one rumor).  Just have a look at whats out there!  Have fun Dubs fans!  Damn if only we could have basketball before January?

so to me the starting lineup looks like this…

PG Steph Curry

SG Dorrel Wright

SF Shane Battier or Wilson Chandler

PF David Lee

C Lamar Odom

Bench PG Jeremy Lin, PG/SG Charles Jenkins, SG/SF Klay Thompson, SG/SF Reggie Williams, SF Al Thornton, PF Louis Amondson, PF/C Ekpe Udoh, PF/C Jeremy Tyler, C Andris Biedrins.

That is quite a deep team.  I have quite a bit of faith that Jenkins and Thompson will be great back-ups that will run the opposing teams second unit out of the building.  Those two could complement each other very well.  Jenkins is an Ellis type of player with some bulk to out muscle opponents.  Very special.  Everyone knows Klay Thompson is going to shoot the lights out.  Jimmer Freddette vs Klay Thompson? We will see…

Give me a real big man like Odom for Tyler to learn from please?  I think David Lee could be very good for Tyler as well.  Tyler and Udoh in the paint at the same time could be hell on opposing offenses.

The Fraz…
